Description

Mormon Church President John Taylor Letter Signed, Co-signed by First Counselor in the First Presidency George Q. Cannon. One page secretarial manuscript on President's Office letterhead, 7.75" x 10.5", Salt Lake City, Utah, May 7, 1885, to A. O. Smoot, Provo, Utah. It reads: "Sometime in January last you were requested to collect from your friends a certain amount of money to be expended, if necessary, in a certain direction, which was explained to you at that time. You were also informed that, if it were not used for the purpose mentioned, it would be returned to you, and through you, to the parties who subscribed it. It has not been used for that purpose; but the expenses of the agents who were intrusted with the business have been 11 per cent of the whole amount. We have thought, therefore, that you would not object to these expenses being deducted. Enclosed please find a draft for $1,335.00, which is the amount you forwarded to us, less the 11 per cent, and which it gives us pleasure to send to you". Stains and two small splits along upper margin, else fine condition. John Taylor, third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, here writes to the prominent Abraham O. Smoot, variously former mayor of Salt Lake City and Provo. Taylor's co-signer, Englishman George Cannon, published the Deseret News and was heavily engaged in missionary work.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
