Description

Mormon Church President John Taylor Autograph Letter Signed. One page on President's Office letterhead, 7.25" x 10.5", Salt Lake City, Utah, to A. O. Smoot, Provo, Utah. The letter reads: "In relation to the affair referred to in your letter of Feb 18th 1885, I had been under the impression that you were receiving $500.00 per year, for sometime, on account of your services, but cannot now refer to it. But I think you ought to have $1000.00 per year for your services, and take great pleasure in appropriating that amount in your behalf commencing January 1st 1885. If it is going to be our accommodation to you to obtain an office, you can count on that amount for two year(s) past as well as for the future. We still have to meet the same troubles of not having a place in Provo to put an office into. When the clouds roll by, we may be able to talk about these matters. With kindest regards to yourself & family". Light creases, else crisp and very fine. The letter's recipient, prosperous Abraham Owen Smoot, was a former mayor of both Salt Lake City and Provo. A major investor in the region's economy, Smoot was also instrumental in developing Brigham Young Academy, which would, of course, evolve into the university of that name.
