    Mirabeau B. Lamar Partially Printed Document Signed "Mirabeau B. Lamar" as president of the Republic of Texas, One page, 9.75" x 7.5", October 1, 1840, Austin, Texas. The document is a $500 Republic of Texas government bond issued to Charles De Morse and countersigned by Acting Texas Treasury Secretary William Sevey. This attractive bond features vignettes of a farmer plowing the fields, an American Indian, and a central star. The bond, produced by the Southern Bank Note Company of New Orleans, still retains ten interest stubs at the bottom. Attractively framed with an image of Lamar, 23.5" x 15.5". The usual cut cancellations, else fine.

    Mirabeau B. Lamar was the second president of the Republic of Texas and Charles De Morse was the young republic's stock commissioner. He had the task of attempting to fund and bond the public debt. Morse also served in the Texas Army and the Texas Navy and practiced law in Matagorda and Austin. During the United States Civil War, Morse served as the colonel of the 29th Texas Cavalry Regiment. Today, he is known as "The Father of Texas Journalism."
