Justice William O. Douglas Typed Letters (6) Signed and One Autograph Note Signed. Group six of letters signed "Wm O Douglas" written to Norman Cousins from November 2, 1946 to March 20, 1964. The letters are typed on Supreme Court letterhead and most measure 5.75" x 9". The correspondence consists of usual business, discussion of articles from the Saturday Review, and plans to meet. In the letter dated March 20, 1964, Douglas offered to write a review of Mary Watkins' book Afghanistan: A Land in Transition, but was politely turned down due to the book having come out the previous year. However, an internal memo (one page, 8.5" x 6.25", March 23, 1964) reveals that there were additional reasons for refusing his review: "There are several reasons against assigning this book to Justice Douglas: it was published December 18, 1963' the Justice and the author are friends; the Justice is a poor writer. ***Asia Society Called Rochelle. She explained points 1 and 2 above."

Also included in the group is an Autograph Note Signed "WOD". One page, 8.5" x 11", July 29, 1975, written in the lower right margin of a letter Douglas had received from Cousins. It reads: "Dear Norman, as Cathy has written you [illegible] to see Arons before I go next Aug 8th in at [illegible] in August". The lot includes four retained carbons of letters sent to Douglas by Cousins.

Douglas served on the High Court from 1939 until 1975. Consistently liberal, in 1953 he granted a stay of execution to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who had been convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and were subsequently executed. The House of Representatives made an unsuccessful attempt to impeach Douglas for this act. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
