Judge Roy Bean Land Sale Document Signed " witnis Roy Bean." One page, 8.5" x 9", Del Rio, Texas; March 1, 1890. A document acknowledging the purchase of land, totaling 1280 acres in Val Verde County, for the sum of $700, by Cesario Torres. Bean signs as a witness. With docketing on verso. The document is accompanied by a July 14, 1849 deed for a plot of 320 acres in Galveston County.

The legendary Roy Bean (circa 1825-1903), lived on the wrong side of the law until he was appointed justice of Pecos County in 1882. He operated with Confederate irregulars during the Civil War, first in New Mexico and then in Texas near San Antonio. He settled in San Antonio for some twenty years, before moving to Pecos County in 1882. He opened a saloon there until he became, or named himself, Justice of the Peace. Known for his unusual applications of that law, he once he fined a corpse the $40 that it had in its pocket for concealing a pistol; the money was used to pay for the burial.

Condition: The document has flattened folds, with light toning and foxing throughout. There are areas where the ink has smeared. Boldly signed by Bean. The accompanying deed has flattened folds, with uneven toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Chipping and separations at the edges and folds. There is a large separation at the center horizontal fold with paper loss.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
