Judah P. Benjamin: 1841 Autographed Manuscript Signed. 8" x 13" AMS, New Orleans, March 6, 1841, 4pp., written on four sides of a single sheet folded in half. The bulk of the document, written in French, seems to be a legal form pertaining to an estate (a petition to the court). A list of four slaves ("esclaves") with their names and ages appears towards the end of the document. An endorsement signed "Benjamin Atty", written in English, is written at the top of the first page, directing that the cash proceeds be applied to interest and the unpaid balance on notes due the petitioner (Laurent Millandon), as well as costs of the suit. Judah P. Benjamin was a Senator from Louisiana and served as Attorney General, Secretary of War and Secretary of State in the Confederate government. He escaped to England after the war and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1872. In fine condition with overall age toning.
