    Description

Josiah Bartlett Autograph Land Deed Signed. One page, 8" x 13, Kingston, New Hampshire, March 28, 1763. In engrossing this document, Bartlett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, has written his own name five times. The document records that Samuel Scribner, "Labourer" of "Stevens Town in the Province of New Hampshire," conveys "a Certain Piece or Parcel of Land Lying or being in that Tract of Land in said Province called Stevens Town . . . for and in Consideration of the Sum of Six Hundred Pounds old tenor" to "Josiah Bartlett of Kingston aforsd. Physician." Bartlett (1729-1795) was a New Hampshire physician and lifelong public servant, serving variously as a delegate to the Continental Congress, a chief justice of the New Hampshire Superior Court, and governor of the state. With weakness and some separation at the folds. Toned with docketing on the verso.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
