DescriptionJoseph Hewes Partial Document Signed. One page, 8" x 6.75", "Chowan County [North Carolina]," n. d. Hewes places his signature as "one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace" regarding the violent assault of Joseph Blonnt by Thomas Hoskins and the further fear that Blonnt is "in Danger of some further Corporal Danger or bodily Injury from the said Thomas Hoskins." The paper on which this was written is mottled throughout. Detachment along some of the folds has been repaired on the verso.
At the start of the American Revolution, Hewes (1730-1799), a successful ship owner and merchant, put his entire fleet at the disposal of the Continental Navy. As secretary of the Naval Affairs Committee of the Continental Congress, he was, in effect, America's first secretary of the Navy. A member of the Continental Congress (1774-1776) and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Hewes accepted reelection to Congress in 1779 despite health problems, but failed to retain his seat and died a few months later.
