Jonathan Trumbull Sr. Letter Signed as governor of Connecticut. One page (four integral pages), 4.5" x 7.5", Lebanon [Connecticut], April 1, 1776. In this letter, Governor Trumbull summons three advisers for an emergency meeting after being alerted by Governor Nicholas Cooke of neighboring Rhode Island that some twenty-eight British warships had been sighted in Narragansett Bay, "undoubtedly having the Ministerial troops on board." Alarmed at the prospect of this force coming ashore in Connecticut two weeks after the British evacuation of Boston, Trumbull summons Deputy Governor Matthew Griswold, a future governor; Benjamin Huntington, a future member of the Continental Congress; and Colonel Jabez Huntington, a shipping magnate and future militia general. The body of the letter reads:

"Governor Trumbull . . . desires their immediate attendance at his Office in Lebanon to advise and Consult on Affairs and Business of importance. He is informed by Gov. Cooke by Express from Providence dated March 31st 1776 5 oclo. p.m. that one Ship of War hath arrived in the Harbour of Newport, and that twenty seven more undoubtedly having the Ministerial Troops on board are within Leconat(?) Point, within a few Hours Sail of Newport."

Governor Trumbull was elected governor of Connecticut every year from 1769 through 1784 (1769-1776 as colonial governor; 1776-1784 as state governor). Though the British did not invade Connecticut in 1776, they did one year later from Compo Beach. This letter is toned with smoothed folds. A small amount of paper loss occurs in the lower right corner of the address page due to the original opening of the seal (no loss of text). All ink is dark and clear.
