Description

Jonathan B. Smith (1742-1812) Signer of the Articles of Confederation, Autograph Letter Signed, "Jona. B. Smith" one page with integral address leaf addressed in his hand and an attached two page Autograph Document, 7.25" x 9.75", Lancaster, [Pennsylvania], December 22, 1777 to Thomas Wharton, President of Pennsylvania. Writing from Lancaster where Congress had fled following the British capture of Philadelphia, Smith happily reports that "...the army has taken quarters in a position which I presume will be agreeable to the State. Congress have now before them a number of resolutions concerning the army which will probably be transmitted in a day or two to the Assembly. On the other leaf you have a copy of an act passed by the State of Virginia which your delegates thought it their [interest] to transmit to you..." True to his word, he has transcribed the legislation from Virginia authorizing the procurement of clothing. The army's position to which Smith refers was of course Valley Forge, Pennsylvania where Washington and his army remained in great misery until the British evacuated Philadelphia in the Spring of 1778. Light toning along folds, neatly laid in to a larger sheet, small loss from seal tear resulting in loss of one word, and other tears repaired, else very good condition. Given the resonance of "Valley Forge" to all students of American history, any document noting that encampment retains incredible verve. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
