    Description

John Penn Autograph Docket Signed "J. Penn." One page, 7.5" x 6.25", North Carolina, May 4, 1774. Penn, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, has docketed the verso of an order to the sheriff of Granville County commanding him to "take the body of Robert Robertson Labourer if to be found in you bailiwick and him safely keep so that you have him before the Justices of our Inferior Court." Moderate waterstaining of the upper edge with little affect to the text. Folds are weak and separating, repaired with tape in places. Minor loss of paper in spots.

In addition to signing the Declaration, John Penn (1741-1788) also signed the Articles of Confederation in 1777. He retired in 1780 and returned home to practice law.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
