DescriptionJohn O. Meusebach and Carl von Iwonski Contract Signed. Four pages, 9" x 11", New Braunfels, December 1, 1845, in German. Meusebach signs as the general agent for this contract for land from the Society for the Protection of German Emigrants in Texas. Staining, soiling, and separations along some folds. The edges bear some chipping and small holes. Toned paper.
The contract begins as translated: "Between the authorized agent of the Society for the Protection of German Emigrants to Texas, the Nobleman von Meusebach of the first part and Mr. Carl von Iwonski for himself and in the name of his brother, Mr. Leopold von Iwonski of the other part the following contract has been after mature deliberation agreed upon and made." Ten short sections follow, the first granting Carl von Iwonski "480-500 acres for gratuitous use and cultivation for five successive years - also until 1851." The remaining sections grant a dwelling house, animals, wood, and a horse, to Iwonski in exchange for Iwonski preparing the land for cultivation. He was also to build fences, finish the dwelling house, plant gardens and orchards, among other things, within five years, when the property was to be turned over to the Society.
The Society for the Protection of German Emigrants in Texas appointed John Meusebach (1812-1897) its commissioner general in Texas the year this contract was drawn up. Though Meusebach tried to serve the new German emigrants, he was soon overwhelmed by their numbers, along with a shortage of funds and too much debt. Still, he founded such German settlements as Fredericksburg. Carl von Iwonski (1830-1912) was a German-born artist who moved to Texas and became known for his portraits of Texas pioneers.
