John Marshall Partial Autograph Document Signed "J Marshall." One page, 7.75" x 3.5", no place, circa 1790. Marshall's partial document is in regard to William Short affairs of business. "In as requested by Mr Short to finish some business commenced by him for Sir Peyton Skipwith, I do not know whether I ever received from Sir Peyton any fees on this amount but I know that I have not & never had any charge against him therefore." The back has been docketed in an unknown hand "Genl. Marshalls certificate Wm Shorts affair".

John Marshall (1755-1835) served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, was a commissioner to France, the U.S. House of Representatives for Virginia, and as secretary of state under John Adams before he was appointed to the Supreme Court by President John Adams. The longest serving chief justice in the history of the court, he was instrumental in making the Supreme Court an equal branch of the U.S. government. Virginia planter Sir Peyton Skipwith (1740-1805) was William Short's uncle. Short owed a debt to his uncle, and hoped to repay it by acting as Skipwith's attorney on several occasions, but John Marshall had to take over the cases after Short left for Europe in 1784.

Condition: Light toning throughout, usual mail folds, with small spots of soiling. Overall very fine.
