DescriptionJohn Jay Partly Printed Document Signed as Governor of New York. One page, 13.75" x 9.25", Albany, NY, March 31, 1798. A military appointment, naming Ezra Beard a Lieutenant in the Schoharie County militia. Document bears an intricate paper seal at upper left with Jay's signature directly below. Moderate toning; folds. Hinged along the left margin to a larger backing board measuring 14" x 11" and accompanied by a color portrait and a steel engraving of the great jurist, each measuring approximately 7" x 10".
Following a successful career as President of the Continental Congress (1778-1779) and US Secretary of Foreign Affairs (1784-1790), Jay became the second Governor of the state of New York in 1795. Jay would go on to serve as first Chief Justice of the United States (1789-1795).
