DescriptionJohn Henninger Reagan Letter Signed "John H. Reagan". One page, 7.75" x 9.75", U.S. House of Representatives letterhead, March 27, 1886, Washington, D.C., to "Belmont Perry, Esq." of Woodbury, New Jersey, concerning Texas Confederate Generals Louis T. Wigfall and John W. Whitfield. Toned and fine.
This short letter, written on lined paper, reads in part: "Gen. Wigfall's address at the time of his death was Baltimore, Md. where some of his family still reside. General Whitfield lived at Halletsville Lavaca County, Texas at the time of his death." Reagan (1818-1905) served as the Confederate States Postmaster General during the Civil War. After the war, he served in the U.S. House and the Senate. General Wigfall (1816-1874) fled to England after the Civil War, hoping to incite war between that country and the U.S. He returned to the U.S. in 1872, taking up residence in Baltimore. In 1874, he moved back to Texas where he died. General Whitfield recruited Whitfield's Legion, one of only two legions that served the Confederacy from Texas.
