Description

John Hancock Signed Faneuil Hall Lottery Ticket. One partially printed page, 3.5" x 2", Boston; June 1765. A lottery ticket for the rebuilding of Faneuil Hall, numbered 4100. The ticket entitled the "Possessor of this Ticket...to any Prize drawn against said Number, in a Lottery granted by an Act of the General Court of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, for Rebuilding Faneuil-Hall; subject to no Deduction." Signed, "John Hancock."

Faneuil Hall, located in Government Center in Boston, was originally built in 1743. The hall was devastated in a 1761 fire and rebuilt by the townspeople using funds collected from a series of lotteries in the following years. The tickets were heavily advertised in local newspapers and endorsed by well-respected political leaders such as Hancock to ensure support for the system. Following its refurbishment, the hall was used by several famous revolutionaries, such as Samuel Adams and James Otis, earning it the nickname "the Cradle of Liberty."

Condition: Diagonally cut across the engraved border at left. Light offsetting from previous matting. Ticket is mounted to card stock.
