DescriptionJohn Hancock Military Appointment Signed as governor of Massachusetts. One partially-printed page, 15.5" x 12" (sight), October 4, 1790, appointing "John Sherman Junr. . . . Captain of a Company in the first Regiment first Brigade and fifth Division of the militia of this Commonwealth comprehending the Counties of Plimouth [sic] Barnstable Bristol, Dukes County and Nantucket." Countersigned by John Avery Jr. as secretary. Hancock's easily recognizable signature is featured near the left edge. John Sherman (1762-1840) had previously served during the Revolutionary War. Matted and framed to an overall size of 23.25" x 20.25".
Condition: Folds are weak with separation at the intersections. Resulting paper loss has been repaired, with some loss of text. Small tears at the left edge near Hancock's signature.
