Description

John Hancock Document Signed as President of the Second Continental Congress. One partially printed page, 14.75" x 9.25", no date; [Philadelphia, Pennsylvania]. Appointment of Nicholas Scull, Esquire to the Army of the United Colonies. Signed, "John Hancock" and countersigned by Secretary of the Continental Congress, Charles Thomson. Docketed on verso.

This certificate was likely intended for Nicholas Scull, a "Junior Surgeon" belonging to the General Hospital of the Northern Department and listed on a March 1780 return as being on detached duty in Pennsylvania. It is possible that he had previously served as an Ensign in the First Pennsylvania Battalion and may have been a relative of noted surveyor and cartographer Nicholas Scull (1687-1761).

Following a chaotic first few months of the Revolutionary War in which militias served in a largely improvisational and uncoordinated manner, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army on June 14, 1775. The force mostly consisted of volunteers from New England, although George Washington actively sought to recruit soldiers from all thirteen colonies. In spite of Washington's efforts, the newly-organized legion was characterized by disorganization, poverty, and high rates of desertion throughout the fight for independence.

Condition: Toning and foxing throughout, a bit darker along right edge. Separations along all folds have been professionally mended on verso. There is a bit of paper loss along the central fold and where folds intersect affecting a few printed words. There is a mended separation through Thomson's signature, but Hancock's signature remains unaffected. Small chips and tears along the right margin.
