Description
John Hancock Appointment Signed "John Hancock". One partially printed document, 12.25" x 8.25" (sight), Philadelphia; January 12, 1777. A Congressional appointment making "David Grier Esquire...Lieutenant Colonel of the Seventh Battalion of Pennsylvania in the Army of the United States, raised for the Defense of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof...". The document is signed by Hancock, as President of the Second Continental Congress, and countersigned by Charles Thomson as secretary. The appointment has been matted and framed to the overall size of 18.75" x 15.5".Lieutenant Colonel David Grier (1741-1790) had been an attorney in York County, Pennsylvania when the Revolutionary War broke out. He became a captain in the Sixth Pennsylvania Regiment in 1776, but was promoted to be commanding officer of the Seventh Pennsylvania Regiment after the regiment's colonel, William Irvine, was captured. Following the Battle of Brandywine, Grier was stabbed in the side by a bayonet as the Americans fought near Paoli, Pennsylvania. He recovered from his wound and was then stationed at Valley Forge. Grier survived the war and was eventually mustered out in January 1781.
Condition: Flattened folds, with some small separations where folds caused some weaknesses. Very bold signature and bright paper.
