DescriptionJohn Dickinson Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 5.75", "In Council Philadelphia," October 6, 1785. Founding Father John Dickinson, signer of the Declaration of Independence, signs this letter during his final days as president of Pennsylvania authorizing the payment of salary and reimbursement for travel expenses owed to Charles Pettit as a Pennsylvania delegate to the Confederation Congress. Pettit has endorsed the verso, but the final "ttit" of his name has been cut away. The body of the letter reads in full:
"Pay to the Honorable Charles Petit Esquire or his order the Sum of Two hundred and seventy two pounds fifteen shillings specie being his pay as a Delegate to Congress from the twenty seventh of May until the thirtieth day of September 1785 and mileage-according to the Comptroller Generals Report."
John Dickinson (1732-1808) served the American people in various roles, including as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1774 until late 1776. He left the office of president of Pennsylvania twelve days after signing this letter, replaced by Benjamin Franklin. Charles Pettit (1736-1806) also served in different roles-quartermaster general and various secretarial positions-before being selected by the Pennsylvania legislature as a delegate to the Confederation Congress from 1785-1787. This toned document is silked on both sides and carefully inset into a larger archival sheet for an overall size of 8.5" x 6".
