Description

John Calhoun Partly Printed Document Signed as Secretary of War. One page, approximately 10" x 8", Washington. D.C., September 1, 1818. White paper seal at lower left affixed with red wax. In 1817, President James Monroe appointed Calhoun secretary of war, a position he held until 1825. Here, Calhoun has added his signature to a military appointment.

In full: "The President of the United States having been pleased to appoint Hannibal Day a Cadet in the service of the United States, he is to be received as such, and entitled to all the consideration attached to said appointment Given at the War Office of the United States, this First day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and Eighteen, and in the Forty third year of the Independence of said States. John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War."

Following his cadet appointment, Hannibal Day was assigned to the infantry and served in the Indian wars, including the Seminole War and the Mexican War. At the outbreak of Civil War, he became colonel of the 6th Infantry. Day was elderly, one of the oldest officers commanding at Gettysburg (only George S. Greene was older), and in August 1863, he left the Army of the Potomac for less demanding assignments. He commanded Fort Hamilton in New York from August 1863 until June 1864, and played minor administrative roles after that. A brevet rank of brigadier general was awarded to him on March 13, 1865. Document bears Calhoun's large, handsome signature. Document shows moderate occasional age-toning.
