John C. Calhoun Letter Signed as U.S. Secretary of War. Two pages, 7.75" x 10", April 11, 1818, "Department of War," to Ebenezer Huntington "Mem[ber] of Congress for Conn[ecticut]" concerning appropriations for arming the militia. Toned; fine.

    More Information:

In part: "Inclosed, you will find a copy of the estimates and calculations on which the distribution of arms under the act of Congress of the 23d of April, 1808, for arming the whole body of the militia was made, with a letter from the ordnance department, & a statement of the transfers from the appropriation. The distribution was, as you will perceive, made on the last returns of the militia from each state, a principle certainly not so correct as if it had been made and each year, on the returns of the preceding one. . . . The militia returns are so defective, that no average from the passage of the act 'till the distribution can be struck by which it could be made. . . . In future, the distribution will be annually made."

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
