John C. Calhoun Document Signed "J.C. Calhoun" as Monroe's Secretary of War, one page, 7.75" x 9.5". Department of War [Washington]. July 24, 1821. A printed form, signed by Calhoun in ink, addressed to Cadet "William Radford/care of Hon. R M Johnson/Great Crossing Ky." In part, "You are hereby notified, that on repairing to West Point, in the state of New-York, in the month of June next, and reporting yourself to the Superintendent of the Military Academy, you will be examined for admission into that Institution, and if qualified, will be admitted conditionally, as a Cadet..." The lower portion of Calhoun's letter is headed "Qualifications Necessary for Admission." In part, "Each cadet...must be able to read distinctly and pronounce correctly; to write a fair legible hand; and to perform, with facility and accuracy, the various operations of the ground rules of arithmetic, both simple and compound...and be above fourteen, and not exceeding twenty-one years of age." John C. Calhoun was Monroe's Secretary of War from 1817-1825, Vice President under J.Q. Adams and Jackson (1825-1832), Tyler's Secretary of State (1844-1845), and U.S. Senator from South Carolina (1832-1843, 1845-1850). Richard M. Johnson represented Kentucky in the House of Representatives (1807-1819, 1829-1837) and U.S. Senate (1819-1829) and served as Van Buren's Vice President (1837-1841).
