John C. Calhoun Autograph Letter Signed "JC Calhoun". Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 9.75", Fort Hill; May 19, 1839. A letter to H.C. Fisher, concerning the protection of the institution of slavery within southern slaveholding states, particularly in North Carolina. He writes, in part: "I enclose a number of the [illegible] containing a communication signed Amicus recommending the public Southern Run to the people of the slave holding states. A work of this kind is indispensable to our safety and character as a people. I have entire confidence in the competency of A. P. Upshur for conducting the work. He will enter in his duties with great zeal, as well as ability and all that is wanting is the patronage of those whose interest is [illegible] to defend. As hard as are the times, it must not be permitted to fail. The subscription has started well in the state, both parties' unity in support of the work. All that is wanting to ensure its success is, that a few enlightened & patriotic citizens in each state should step forward and exact themselves to accomplish the object..."

John C. Calhoun was Monroe's Secretary of War from 1817-1825, Vice President under J.Q. Adams and Jackson (1825-1832), Tyler's Secretary of State (1844-1845), and U.S. Senator from South Carolina (1832-1843, 1845-1850). Calhoun was a radical proponent of slavery calling it a "positive good".
