DescriptionJohn Armstrong Jr. Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of War "J. Armstrong". Two pages, 7.75" x 10", Washington, August 7, 1813. Armstrong issues orders to a colonel to take a position on the road between Baltimore and Annapolis in preparation for a possible British attack. He also brings up issues of command as set forth by the Articles of War. Excellent content with much to lend itself for further research. The letter is toned with some minor holes, a split in the folds, and foxing, the usual fold creases, and some faint mounting remnants on the verso. Otherwise, it is in very good condition.
It reads, in part: "You will move out of Annapolis & take post on the road leaving to Baltimore at some convenient place & within...distance of Annapolis until you are advised that the [illegible] has passed that place or until they give evidence of an intention to attack it. The difficulty with regard to command arises from the fact that the Governor is not in the service of the United States. A militia officer of higher rank than yourself, called out by the United States, will, under the 62nd & 94th Articles of War, command you. On the other construction the Gov? of New York calling out a single battalion of militia would be authorized to command all the U.S. troops in the 9th Mil. District. Controversies of this kind ought to be avoided & I hope you will make such explanation on this confusion to the Governor of Maryland, as should satisfy him that nothing disrespectful to him or could be intended...".
