    Description

Jefferson Davis: Clipped Signature and Two Cartes de Visite. Excised from a larger document to an overall size of 5" x 2.25", the Confederate president has signed "Respectfully Jefferson Davis" in blue ink. Toned along the upper margin with mounting remnants on the verso; damage to both left corners do not affect the signature.

Accompanying the signature are two cdvs. The first, measuring 2.5" x 4", is the familiar Mathew Brady image so often associated with him. Affixed to an E. & H.T. Anthony mount with clipped lower corners. The second, 2.25" x 3.75", shows the same image, but cut to an oval portrait with "Our First President" printed below. The verso of the Augusta Photographic Gallery of Art mount features a short eulogy. There is damage to the image at the upper right corner and the mount is heavily toned.
