    Description

    Jefferson Davis Autograph Letter Signed "Jeffer. Davis" as U.S. senator from Mississippi. One page, 8" x 10", January 18, 1849, n.p., with "Com. Mil. Affairs" as header. Davis, who served as the chairman for the Committee of Military Affairs, writes this letter to "Col. Talcott/ U. S. Ordnance" asking for advice. Bold writing; near fine.

    More Information:

    The future president of the Confederacy writes, "I enclose to you a resolution which involved a question of policy. . . . [I] would be pleased to have your advice before taking any action upon it. In a commendation held before the resolution was presented I stated the objection to opening ordinance accts with other than state authorities." Talcott was court-martialed from the army two years after this letter was written.
