James G. Blaine Autograph Letters (Three) Signed "J. G. Blaine". All of these letters (two are dated 1867 and one is dated 1870) are written to Maine politician Sidney Perham; one letter congratulates him on winning the governor's race. All are toned and fine.

    More Information:

In the two 1867 letters, both written from Augusta, Maine, Blaine gives recommendations for government positions. In the 1870 (June 17) letter, written on House of Representatives letterhead ("Forty-first Congress U.S. Washington, D.C."), Blaine writes Perham shortly before the latter took office as Maine's governor. In part: "As you are aware I was honorably committed to the support of Gen. Husey for the gubernatorial nomination and did what was fair to secure that end. But you must also be well aware that my position did not spring from any hostility, either personal or political, to yourself. I believe our acquaintance and friendship of nearly sixteen years--six of which we passed together in Congress--have never known any  interruption. No man in Maine will exert himself more cordially or more earnestly for your election than myself."

James Blaine served in several key political positions in the decades following the Civil War. Perham served as the thirty-third governor of Maine from 1871 through 1874. In 1867, both men were members of the United States House of Representatives.
