    Description

Howell Pennsylvania Map, Autograph Letter Signed "Reading Howell", one page of four pages, 9" x 14.5", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 10, 1788, to Edmund Physick (Penn Family agent). The letter reads, "In compliance with your request I have on the other side of this Sheet of paper drawn a small Draft to shew the exact figure and shape of the State of Pennsylvania as it will be represented on my large Map intended shortly to be published. I have also with the greatest accuracy in my power calculated the number of Acres contained within the Boundaries of Pennsylvania which are now ascertained by the actual measurement of of all the outlines and find the amount to be twenty eight millions eight hundred thirty five thousand four hundred and eighty one Acres and a half and further I have with great care and precision computed the particular quantity of Land which the Indians Released to the State of Pennsylvania by their two Deeds dated 23rd October 1784 and 21st January 1785 and find the same amounts to be eight millions nine hundred and ten thousand six hundred and eighty Acres and have delineated on the annexed Draft of Pennsylvania the particular part of the same, where last this mentioned quantity purchased of the said Indians is Situate; it is distinguished by a line or shading of yellow paint." The second page carries an Autograph Note Signed "Edw Shippen", which effectively notarizes Howell's letter and map as being authentic. Shippen, President of the court of Common Pleas, also affixed to the document a certificate signed by Pennsylvania President (and future governor) Thomas Mifflin. The map is on the fourth page and is meticulously drawn with Pennsylvania's borders in blue ink and the demarcation of new lands shown in yellow. The careful and industrious Reading Howell's final map was published in 1791 and largely corresponds to the one accompanying this letter. A small bit of archival repair, else lightly toned as expected and in very good condition. Ex. Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
