DescriptionHilliard Veren Document Twice Signed. One page, 8" x 8.25", Salem [Massachusetts Bay Colony], September 27, 1658, concerning the testimony of a William Hathorne earlier in "General Court" in February in Salem "sworn before . . . John Endicott Gov." This Massachusetts Bay colonial document is signed twice by court clerk Hilliard [or Hillyard] Veren (1621-1683), once in the top margin ("This is a true copy compared with its originall as on file in Salem Court Records by Hillyard Veren Clerk") and once in the lower margin ("This is a true copy taken out of the Court Records at Salem by Mr. Hillyard Veren Clerk"). Docketed on the verso. Toned with some weakness at the folds; chipping along some edges.
William Hathorne appears often as a court officer and sometimes full magistrate in Salem General Court records throughout the mid-1600s. He is most noted for the persecution of Quakers, and was the father of Salem Witch Trials Judge John Hathorne. This document lists Hathorne as being "aged 51 or thereabouts" in 1658, which would coincide with the birth year listed for officer/magistrate William Hathorne.
