Henry Laurens Document Signed "Henry Laurens President." One page, 9.5" x 5.25", "In Congress [Philadelphia]," December 3, 1777. Henry Laurens was one month into his tenure as president of the second Continental Congress (he succeeded John Hancock as president on November 1, 1777) when he signed order granting fellow congressman "Richard Law Esqr a delegate from the State of Connecticut . . . leave of absence to return home." Smoothed folds with light spots of foxing.

Laurens (1724-1792) served as president for one year and in the fall of 1779, was made minister to the Netherlands. Laurens was imprisoned in the Tower of London and was released on December 31, 1781, in exchange for Lord Cornwallis.
