    Henry Clay Signed Card with an Autograph Letter Signed by Robert Wickliffe. Card, 3.5" x 2.5" signed "H. Clay Ashland Oct. 1849." Together with a one page, 8" x 9.75", Lexington, [Kentucky]; September 21, 1827 letter from Robert Wickliffe to an unnamed correspondent concerning a legal matter.
    Condition: The card has tape attached on the top and bottom and adhesive residue on verso. The Wickliffe letter has horizontal and vertical folds and several old damp stains, without affecting the text.

    More Information:

    Henry Clay (1777-1852) was in the beginning of his fourth and last term (1849-1852) as a U.S. senator from Kentucky when he signed this card.

    Robert Wickliffe (1774-1859) was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Kentucky, where he practiced law in Lexington. Known as the "Old Duke," Wickliffe was one of the wealthiest men and largest slaveholders in Kentucky.
