Henry Clay Scarce Check Accomplished Entirely in His Hand. 2.5" x 8". No place, "22 Nov. 1836". A handwritten check: "Pay to Thomas Broadus [sic] on order One hundred and fifty dollars / Cash of the ... B of the B of K[entucky] H. Clay". Cut cancellation affects a single letter and well away from signature; light stains and foxing, tiny chips at corners. Broaddus has endorsed the check on the verso. Clay, a longtime Whig political leader, is best known as the "Great Pacificator". He played important roles in brokering critical compromises regarding the thorny issue of slavery, including the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. Clay was slave holder, and ironically, also a founder of the American Colonization Society.
