DescriptionHenry Clay Autograph Slave Hire Document Signed "H Clay." One page, 8" x 3.75", Lexington, Kentucky, January 1, 1846. The document reads in full:
"On or before the 1st day of January 1847 I promise to pay to Spencer Graves...twenty dollars for the hire of negro man named Moses - the ensuing year, and bind myself to furnish him the customary clothing to pay his tax and doctors [sic] bills. If the negro dies during the year the said fine is to be paid is to be paid in proportion to the time he serves only." The word "Paid" and a crude "X" appear in the center of the document.
With some minor chipping along the edges, mild toning and old fold creases, else fine.
