Henry Clay Autograph Letter Signed "H Clay." One page, 7.75" x 6.75", Washington, D.C.; May 12, 1825. A letter addressed to Joseph B. Nones of Philadelphia. In part, "Immediately on the receipt of your letter of the 7th Ulto. I directed the Super Intendant of the patent office to attend to the subject of your application for a patent. The specimen of Nankeen which you forwarded is very beautiful. As far as I am competent to judge, your success in the preparation of the color has been complete. And I more ardently hope that you may realize all the advantages which cannot fail I think to flow from so important a discovery. I am highly obliged by the kind consideration of me which has lead [sic] you to think of confering [sic] my name on your Infant establishment. As you have been pleased to ask my consent, I can only say that I feel highly honored by your intention..." Matted and framed with the original transmittal envelope and two engravings, one of Henry Clay and one of Clay's birth home, to an overall size of 20" x 19".

Nankeen was a pale yellow cloth, originally produced in China, made from a specific variety of yellow cotton. The fabric was often used to make trousers during the early 1800s. Joseph B. Nones was awarded the patent for an improvement in the making of buff/yellow nankeen on April 28, 1825.

Condition: Light toning at edges, some minor spoiling along envelope flattened fold. Overall very good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
