Description

HANDWRITTEN 1784 LETTER BY PROMINENT REVOLUTIONARY WAR HERO GENERAL NATHANIEL GREENE. Written to a Col. Fitzgerald in Alexandria, VA, offering personal recommendation of an acquaintance proposing to move to Virginia and asking Fitzgerald’s help for him. Very good condition, old linen-backing. Two fairly minor areas of paper loss, neither affecting any written part. Signed twice, including franked signature on verso. Nice example of a rare important Revolutionary War figure. In 1775, Greene was commissioned the youngest brigadier general in the Continental Army and he commanded Prospect Hill during the British siege of Boston. He commanded major segments of the Continental Army at the battles of Harlem Heights, Fort Lee, Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Monmouth, and Germantown, and was at one point Washington’s choice to succeed him if he were to be killed or captured. He served for two years as Quartermaster of the Army, commanded West Point and presided over the trial of the notorious British spy, Major Andre. Late in the war, he commanded extensive operations in the South, and played a major role in harassing Cornwallis into his Yorktown enclave, the surrender of which essentially ended the war. The 1997 Sanders lists a Greene ALS at $3065. 7 ¼ x 12." LOA Spence and Grad PSA/DNA.
