    George Wythe Autograph Endorsement Signed while serving on the Virginia Court of Chancery. Two pages, 7.5" x 13"; May 18, 1801. A complaint addressed to Wythe regarding a land dispute in Hampshire County filed by William Eskridge against Loyd George. Wythe's endorsement is written at the end of the complaint: "The injunction is awarded on usual terms 18 of may 1801. G. Wythe."

    George Wythe (1726-1806) represented Williamsburg in the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1755 until it was dissolved by the royal governor in 1774. Wythe represented Virginia in the Continental Congress in 1775 and 1776 and signed the Declaration of Independence. Wythe served as a judge for most of his life and was also a prominent law professor at the College of William & Mary. He was a mentor to such notables as Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Henry Clay.

    Condition: Bold ink on toned paper, with a small clean tear at top margin going through a single word. Minor separations at folds at margins. Small area of ink burn affecting a single word in the second line. Small hole at center towards bottom, not affecting any words. Small ink stain on third line from the bottom of the recto.
