George Washington Cabinet, Associates, and Descendants Collection. This lot consists of 17 items, all of which come from people associated with Washington either by position or bloodlines. The bulk of the lot is autograph letters signed, mixed with several documents signed and signatures. That the "Father of Our Country" commanded respect and adulation is inarguable, but as with any great leader, his closest confidants and associates contributed to his success. Some of the signatures featured here include: a document signed by Oliver Walcott Jr., Washington's second Secretary of Treasury; William Smith, Representative from Maryland and first Auditor of the United States Treasury; a customs report signed by William S. Smith, one of Washington's aides-de-camp; autograph letter signed by Fisher Ames, congressman from Massachusetts and a great orator; signature of Charles Lee, Washington's second Attorney General; a signature of William Bradford Jr, Washington's first Attorney General; eight autographed letters signed by J.W. Washington, purported to be a distant relative of Washington; an autographed letter signed by Joseph de Jaudenes, Commissary General and Envoy from the King of Spain; an autographed letter signed by Lawrence Washington in 1834, another purported descendant of Washington; a document listing several items that were sent to the colonies for use by the Washington family; and a document discussing the bills for millinery for the Washington family.

The documents in this lot are in fine condition on average; the documents listing bills for the Washington family are incomplete, having been cut from larger documents; the signatures are also clipped. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
