    More Information:

In full: "The President of the United States having been pleased to appoint Davis Tillson a Cadet in the service of the United States, he is to be received as such, and entitled to all the consideration attached to said appointment Given at the War Office of the United States, this 30th day of June in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine and in the seventy third year of the Independence of said States. Geo. W. Crawford, Secretary of War."

Davis Tillson entered West Point in 1849 but resigned two years later, having injured his foot so badly that it required amputation. In 1857 he was elected to the Maine legislature, and in 1858 became adjutant-general of the state. In 1861 he was appointed captain of the 2d Maine Battery, later serving as chief of artillery in General Edward O. C. Ord's division. Tillson acted as chief of artillery of the Federal First (I) Army Corps at Antietam, a position he held until April 1863. He was commissioned brigadier general in March 1863. Following the war, Tillson resigned and returned to Rockland, Maine, where he was in the granite business, supplying much of the stone used for government buildings in Washington, D.C. Document is mildly age-toned.
