DescriptionGeorge Gilmer Autograph Letter Signed on the Topic of the Cherokee in Georgia. A little more than two pages of a bifolium, 5" x 8"; Lexington; February 27, 1859. The former governor of Georgia writes to Edward Harden: "I suppose that the Cherokee had occupied for an unknown time the territory which the possessed in the upper parts of North Carolina, So. Carolina, & Georgia when they became known to the colonists. I was stationed for some months among them in 1814 and was a member of the Committee on Indian Affairs in 1833- 4 - 5. I conversed often and freely with their principal chiefs about the country occupied by their tribes. I do not recollect ever to have heard a suggestion that the Tribe had occupied any country but that alluded to until they removed to the west of the Mississippi... The Cherokees were and are superior in physical and mental organization to any other Indians of our country." Much more good content. Despite his admiration, the Cherokee suffered greatly during Gilmer's tenure as governor. With his support and direction, Georgia's General Assembly dissolved the Cherokee government, annulling their laws and taking possession of all of their lands in northern Georgia.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
