George Clymer presents payment for work done on the building of the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts

George Clymer Autograph Document Signed. One page, 5.75" x 7.75", Philadelphia, December 14, 1807. In addition to being one of only five individuals to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, George Clymer was also the first president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In that capacity, he penned this document regarding payment for work completed. In full: "In pursuance of a resolution of the board of Directors of the academy of the Fine Arts, I do hereby present to pay to Conrad Kellar [sic], or his order, in twelve months from this date, One hundred fifty nine dollars, value received in work done on the building. Philadelphia, December 14, 1807. Geo Clymer, President." Docketed on verso, and signed by Conrad Kellar and two others, likely acknowledging payment.

Founded in 1805 by Charles Wilson Peale, Rembrandt Peale, William Rush, and other prominent local artists and business leaders, the Academy's white marble neo-classical buildings were designed by John Dorsey, another founding member of the Academy. Conrad Keller was a noted Philadelphia tinsmith with a shop on the southwest corner of Front and Arch Streets. Document is lightly toned with faint docketing ink bleedthrough.
