    George Clinton Land Grant Signed as Governor of New York. One partially printed page, 18.25" x 11.25", New York; February 6, 1792. A document granting "unto James the Township of Brutus...six hundred acres..." Signed, "Geo: Clinton." Retains the original 3.5" paper-covered wax seal of the State of New York affixed by ribbon.

    George Clinton, an American soldier, served as Governor of New York (1777-1795, 1801-1804) and Jefferson and Madison's Vice President from 1805 until his death in 1812. The seal was commissioned by George Clinton and designed by John Jay and Gouverneur Morris, and John Sloss Hobart. The obverse of the seal pictures the sun rising over the Hudson Highlands and the river in the foreground and a riband below with the motto "Excelsior". The obverse shows a tall ragged rock rising out of a turbulent sea with the motto "Frustra" above and "1777" below.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with separations and holes at the folds that affect some of the text. Lightly foxed and toned with offsetting to document from seal. Wear and minor loss to seal.
