    Description

    Gail Borden Document Signed "G. Borden" as Collector of Department of Brazos. One partly-printed page, 7.25" x 5.25", n.p., November 4, 1836. This Republic of Texas document reads in part, "Received of Abram Darst by the hand of Henry Austin his agent . . . in full of three installments due the Government on one league of land." As a publisher, Borden began Texas' first important newspaper, the Telegraph and Texas Register, in 1835. (Along the left margin of this document is printed, "Telegraph, Columbia, Print.") That same year he began serving as the collector for the Department of Brazos. In the 1850s, he received a patent for his process of condensing milk. Torn corners with tape residue at both top corners.
