Frederick Douglass: 1870 Autograph Letter Signed. 4.75" x 6.75" ALS, 1p., Rochester, N.Y., April 6, 1870, written to C. S. Carter, Esq. of New York City. In full: "I have pleasure in sending you the enclosed fifty dollars. Absence from home is my excuse for delay. Respectively yours Frederick Douglass. The route you arranged for me was a pretty hard one, but I am sure you did as well by me as you could and I am satisfied. Please acknowledge the enclosed draft." Affixed to the other side is the front panel of a postally-used envelope addressed to Carter in the hand of author Wilkie Collins, signed by Collins in the lower left corner. Douglass (1818-1895) is a towering figure in African American history, a renowned author, orator and agitator for emancipation. He first traveled to London in 1845 to avoid capture by his former owner and re-enslavement.
