DescriptionFrancis Lewis Autograph Letter Signed "Frans. Lewis." One page, 7.25" x 9", New York, February 28, 1761. Writing to Thomas Riche, Lewis, bound for the Mediterranean, asks for a "Mediteranian Pass which I am informed are to be got at Your Office. The Vessell [on which he will be aboard] will sail in about Ten days." Several small holes can be seen, mostly along the folds. Unevenly toned. Edges are chipped.
Lewis (1713-1802), an native of Wales, arrived in America in 1736. After being held prisoner by the French in the 1750s, he returned to America and became political. He attended the Continental Congress as a delegate for New York and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
