Eugene V. Debs Typed Letter Signed on imprinted letterhead, one page, 8.5" x 5.5", Terre Haute, Ind., March 21, 1914, to a J.E. Watkins enclosing a one page manuscript, likely a contribution to a publication. He writes: "Please find my little contribution enclosed. I hope it will help in some small way to serve your purpose..." Included is the aforementioned contribution titled "Must Free Itself from Mammon's Power", reading, in part: "'What does the church most need to strengthen its appeal?' It must first of all free itself from the domination of the moneyed class and get squarely over on the side of the exploited masses and fight the power that is crushing and degrading them. There is no midway ground and the church is finding it less and less possible to serve both God and Mammon..." The New Testament uses the term Mammon in reference to avarice and greed, and Debs employs the same terminology in his short article. Although distrustful of religion, Debs commonly used Christian terminology in his speeches and writings. Debs (1855-1926) was a lifelong Socialist and labor organizer. He helped found the International Labor Union and Industrial Workers of the World; he also unsuccesfully ran for President as the Socialist Party of America candidate on five occassions. A great pairing that includes a letter boasting a large, bold signature. Both items in near fine condition.
