Elbridge Gerry Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with integral address leaf, 7.25" x 9.25", Cambridge, May 6, 1802. A lifelong politician, Elbridge Gerry not only signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, he also served as Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President of the United States. Here, he sends a letter of introduction to Fulwar Skipworth, Consul General of the United States at Paris, regarding the son of a friend. In part: "My object at present is to introduce to your acquaintance Mr. Swan of Boston, who having just finished his education, is on a tour to France... I need not inform you that he is a true republican, & assure you that myself & family, rank Major Swan & his family, amongst our particular friends." Gerry refers to James Keadie Swan, son of Col. James Swan, former Adjutant General of Massachusetts. Faint age toning evidence on the integral leaf that letter was previously tipped in.
