Description

    Edwin Oswald Legrand Republic of Texas Oath Signed. One partially-printed blue page, 8" x 5.75", "County of San Augustin[e]," April 4, 1839, signed by William Phillips certifying that he "was a resident Citizen of Texas previous to the first of October 1837, and that I intend remaining permanently in the country; that I am a Single man and consider myself justly entitled -- under the act providing for Emigrants previous to the first of October 1837, -- to Six hundred and forty acres of Land." Toned edges show light chipping.

    In 1836, Edwin O. Legrand was elected as a delegate from San Augustine to the Convention of 1836, where he signed both the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the army and saw action at the Battle of San Jacinto. Following the war, Legrand served as Justice of San Augustine County until 1838.
