Description

Edwin M. Stanton: Letter and Commentary. 5" x 8" ALS, April 1, 1867, to Edward Mintown, marked "Private", asking Mr. Mintown to serve on a "commission to examine & report on the claims of Ohio & Indiana for indemnity for expenses in Morgans raid". Sold together with a 7 ¾" x 9 ¾" letter written from Milford, New Hampshire by "Charlie" to "Father" describing meeting Stanton and his family while they were vacationing in Wolfboro. Dated August 12, 1869, just four months prior to Stanton's death. In part: "I had the pleasure of an introduction this morning to Hon. Edwin M. Stanton: the greatest war minister of modern times... He does not enjoy good health and was so much exhausted when he arrived here, that one of the ladies said 'I declare he's drunk.'... Mr. Stanton indulges sometimes in dry wit: does not use high sounding words and says what he means. His trouble is asthma and he told me he had much "rather die with consumption that die with the asthma." Stanton's eldest son told Charlie that the best likeness of his father was the one in John Rogers' "The Council of War", even though the artist had never met Stanton. A refreshing, first-hand "look" at "Old Mars". Stanton was nominated for a seat on the Supreme Court by President Grant, but died before he could assume office.
