Declaration Signer William Ellery Autograph Letter Signed "Wm. Ellery Collr." One page, 6.75" x 8", Collector's Office, Port of Newport, Rhode Island, December 4, 1810. The content of this letter regards exchange rates of foreign currency. It reads in part, "…Not receiving from you or from the Collr. of Providence, the information I wanted relative to the rate at which the money of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway should be estimated, I wrote to the Collr. of Boston and Charlestown, and now give you a copy of his letter. The Big dollar of Denmark, Sweden and Norway is a silver currency and always estimated at 100 cents. The Banco dollar is fixed for the current Dollar by the Bank & those for Denmark & Sweden are here taken at 75 cents…" William Ellery was a Declaration of Independence signer representing Rhode Island, he wrote this letter as customs collector of Rhode Island. This letter is a great look at how money was exchanged and traded at the turn of the 19th century.
